Sumi Ltd is a Finnish non-profit packaging producer organization responsible for fulfilling the statutory packaging producer responsibility for more than 1600 companies.
Established in 1992, Sumi initially operated as a voluntary producer responsibility organization for plastic packaging, developing a nationwide collection and recycling system. In 2023, Sumi expanded its operations to cover the producer responsibility of metal, glass, cardboard, and wood packaging.
Sumi is actively involved in various initiatives that promote the circular economy and the recycling of packaging materials. One of its most significant projects is the construction of a new plastic packaging waste sorting facility, which will incorporate the latest technology to maximize sorting efficiency. This €44 million investment will at least double Finland's plastic packaging sorting capacity, enabling the processing of up to 80,000 tons per year. The project aims to improve Finland’s sorting and recycling rates to meet EU targets. Sumi has also established a voluntary producer responsibility subsidiary dedicated to the collection and recycling of agricultural plastics. The organization’s members include the majority of agricultural plastic producers in Finland. In its first year of operation, the company collected over 40% of the agricultural plastics placed on the Finnish market.
